Ye Olde Privy
Twelve years ago, after we completed the restoration of our Main House, we turned our attention to the sad old cottage and privy in the back yard. Our fabulous architect Bill Huey drew plans the City approved, allowing us to add a porch, then renovate and connect the privy and cottage with a modern kitchen. What a project! We spiffed up these rickety antiques so we could invite hometown friends and family from all over, a decade before we went into the bed & breakfast business. Owning a Historic Charleston cottage is like owning a beach house - everyone wants to come! They've all been many times and they'll all be back, but in the meanwhile, with the City's newly revised rental program, you can now come too, even though we didn't go to high school together and you may be a veeerry distant cousin!
Negotiable monthly rates can include our famous big Southern breakfast. (Alternatively, we can stock pastries, fruit, coffee (always there), juice, and other items so you may sleep late.) Plus off-street parking, WiFi & DirecTV. The kitchen is equipped for average cooking with simple pots, pans, bakeware, plates, cups, and cooking/eating utensils. Please don't expect bizarre gourmet items however. (We don't charge bizarre gourmet rates!) We have a grill you may use.
Back By Popular Demand!
What could be more glorious than spring or fall in Olde Charleston? Or a summer month with idyllic days at our three beaches, 20 minutes away? We'll even supply beach towels, chairs, blankets and coolers at no charge! (But you have to buy the ice!)
Here's the finished interior with its open floor plan, colorful decor, full kitchen with a big refrigerator freezer, stove and microwave, eat-in counter, rainfall shower bath, endless hot water, and central heat & air conditioning. Parking is in the driveway, steps from the cottage.
Some of these old photos are from the City of Charleston's file on 22 Charlotte. The City has a file on every house in the Historic District. NOTHING escapes their scrutiny.

Above: The City gave us permission to add a front porch and a kitchen. Built behind the privy, the new kitchen connects the cottage and privy, now a modern bathroom with a rainfall shower, shown below.
Left and below: the old privy sat beside the slightly renovated cottage, as it appeared shortly after I purchased 22 Charlotte in 2000.
Open Floor Plan
We supply all your towels and bed linens, and our housekeeper will tidy up, empty trash, refresh towels and linens twice a week, and change your bed weekly. The bath has big countertops with four deep drawers for clothes for a month's stay. A big hassock (not pictured) at the foot of the queen bed hides a pull out twin sleeper. There is also a full size sofa (not pictured), which does not open to a bed.
